The 33rd ASEAN Summit ended yesterday in Singapore, the summit which brings together the Southeast Asian countries to advance cooperation and facilitates economic, political, security, military, educational, and sociocultural integration.
At this year’s summit their main goals were “the adoption of the ASEAN Smart Cities Framework and take stock of ASEAN’s achievements this year in strengthening ASEAN’s resilience and innovation as reported” by channelnewsasia.com.
The ASEAN summit also saw more discussion on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), another topic discuss was the US-China trade war and its impact on the region the economic bloc and how they can defend against negative effects of the trade tensions like protectionist policies streading.
The absence of US president Donald Trump was largely felt by the organization, Trump is also expected not to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Papua New Guinea on Friday. Vice president Mika Pence did represent US interests at the summit, and other countries not part of ASEAN like China and Canada did have representatives there.
