Africa’s aspirations as set out in AU Agenda 2063

AU Agenda 2063 has as its motto “The Africa We Want”. It is a strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation of the continent over the next 50 years.

 It builds on, and seeks to accelerate, the implementation of past and existing continental initiatives for growth and sustainable development. AU Agenda 2063 promulgates seven aspirations.

Realistically, the BRICS cannot respond to all the aspirations of the AU Agenda. What I will examine are the pragmatic synergies between BRICS and the African continent, ones that are of shared interest.

Aspiration 1 calls for a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development; Aspiration 4 strives for a peaceful and secure Africa; and Aspiration 6 sets out a vision for an Africa whose development is people-driven, relying on the potential offered by African people, especially women and youths.
