Banyana Banyana edge Nigeria’s Super Falcons

In their opening match of the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations, South Africa’s Banyana Banyana took on Nigeria’s Super Falcons. The match which was a tight affair looked like it would end in a goalless draw, until midfielder Thembi Kgatlana scored the winner – a shock defeat for Nigeria.

Nigeria enters the tournament being Women’s AFCON defending champions and were expected by football analysts to come away with their first victory in group B. This win by Banyana was the first win over Nigeria since the semi final stages of the African Women’s Championship in 2012 as reported by ewn.co.za.

The next group match for Banyana will be against Equatorial Guinea, on Wednesday at 20:30. A win for South Africa will guarantee qualification for the next round and also help build momentum for Bayana which will need as they progress through the tournament.
