Brazil elections: front-runner stabbed at campaign rally

Brazil’s leading politician according to polls, Jair Bolsonaro was stabbed in the abdomen during campaign trail in Juiz de Fora. According to the BBC the suspect has been arrested.

Bolsonaro was then taken to the nearest hospital where in the town of Juiz de Fora, 200km from Brazil’s capital, Rio de Janeiro.  The presidential candidate had surgery and he is expected to recover, says hospital officials.

Deemed controversial, Bolsonaro performed strong in recent opinion polls. According the BBC, he has outraged many Brazilian citizens with racist and homophobic comments.

“The polls suggest he will get the most votes in the first round of the October presidential elections if former President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva remains blocked from standing, but he is unlikely to win a run-off”, reports BBC.
