China hailed the participation of militaries of India and Pakistan for the first time since being members of the Shanghai Cooperation of Organisation (SCO) in a drill held at Chebarkul town in Chelyabinsk region in Russia from 22 – 29 August 2018. The exercise themed Peaceful Mission 2018 is being conducted by the Central Military Commission of Russia.
China hopes that the two countries could enhance relations, both bilaterally and within multilateral mechanisms to maintain peace and stability. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told the media: “We welcome India and Pakistan’s joint participation in this counter-terrorism exercise under the SCO framework”.
The two countries are important in South Asia, says Chunying. She said that stable relations between the Pakistan and India is “significant to the peace and development of the region and the whole world”.
“We sincerely hope that we could enhance their dialogue and cooperate bilaterally and multilateral mechanisms like the SCO, work together to improve their ties and jointly maintain regional peace and stability” said Chunying. Three thousand soldiers from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, India, Pakistan are participating in the drill, says the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson.
