China denies US warship access to Hong Kong after being sanctioned for Russian weapons purchase

The Chinese government has stopped a US Navy warship from docking in the Hong Kong harbor. Access was denied due to sanctions impositions by the US on Chinese Equipment Development Department (EDD) and its head Li Shangfu.

The warship being blocked is the USS Wasp an amphibious assault ship which looks like small version aircraft carrier. The USS Wasp was carrying over 1000 sailors and was scheduled to make berth in Hong Kong next month. This isn’t the first time the Chinese government has block a US warship having denied aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis access to Hong Kong in 2016.

The China’s foreign ministry spokesperson said that the decisions to deny access to Hong Kong’s harbor was evaluated and accepted under the Chinese principle of sovereignty. The spokesperson further said that kind of decisions are made individually based on the surrounding circumstances.

The US and China are both escalating tensions with each other, causing a further deterioration of their relationship.  The US sanctioned Chinese military for purchasing Russian weapons, China retaliated with the blockade. Only time will tell if cooler heads prevail allowing for tensions to subside.
