As leaders of African countries gather for the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), it is projected that China and Africa will further strengthen ties. It is expected that the Summit scheduled 3-4 September will discuss China’s Belt and Road Initiative ‘Maritime Silk Road’.
The year 2018 marks the fifth year of the Chinese proposed Belt and Road Initiative with many African countries expressing their interest. The initiative aims at creating trade infrastructure connecting Africa, Europe and Asia. Cooperation under the initiative is expected to be one of the major topics during the summit.
“We believe that with joint efforts of China and Africa, the Beijing Summit will be a great success and establish a new historical monument of cooperation between Africa and China” Chinese State councillor and Foreign Minister, Wang Yi said in a press conference leading to the Summit.
Eighteen years after establishment the FOCAC continues being successful, having a trade output of 170 billion US dollars in 2017, an increase from 10 billion dollars in 2000, according to China’s ministry of Commerce.
