The South African department of Telecommunications says that it will pause the 4G mobile spectrum auctions until April 2019. This because the government is looking at extending high-speed internet to a greater portion of Africa.
The auction is set to attract the interest of South Africa’s biggest wireless carriers. South Africa’s Vodacom and MTN Group have expressed disappointment in the limited opportunities provided in growing services. The 4G auction has been delayed for years as government and industry regulators fix issues and dispute.
The aim of the auction in 2019 is to keep investment from telecommunications operators going. The second goal of the auction is to reduce prices to gain the best deal for the country. A block of spectrum will also be open to new entrants in to the telecommunications sector.
