South Africa, Cape Town will play host of the 4th Annual Meeting of the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) from 1-2 April. Held under the theme, “Partnership for Sustainable Development”, the meeting will bring together government officials from BRICS countries, leaders of multilateral and national development institutions, distinguished scholars, prominent commercial bankers, captains of industry, legal experts and representatives of civil society organizations.
The NDB was established in 2014 and became operational in July 2015. The first annual meeting was held in Shanghai, China on 20 to 21 July 2016. The meeting has been utilized this event to take stock of its first year of operations; celebrating its achievements, whilst charting a course for the future.
According to the multilateral funding institution, the meeting will present an excellent opportunity to reflect on the global development agenda and role that the NDB could play in financing infrastructure and sustainable development.
South Africa also hosted the 10th BRICS Summit last year and other numerous smaller ministerial, business and civil society meetings. Brazil has this year assumed chairmanship of BRICS bloc taking over from South Africa and taking on all the responsibility that it comes with.
