China’s government shuts down 4 000 websites

China’s government has shut down 4 000 websites and online accounts on their three-month campaign against “harmful” content online. Sites that were shutdown are those with content that infringe copyright, have improper values and contain vulgar language and those which are of an obscene nature.

The Chinese government has been controlling the country’s internet access for years thus this move was not surprising. Previously the government targeted lottery apps and pornographic or violent content, but this time the focus has been on sites that offer free e-books. The government and the publication industry believe people should not be reading material that they should be paying for.

One of the blocked sites is Twitch, a game streaming site that has been gaining a large following in China, over the last few months. However, no official statement has been released on why the authorities have imposed this restriction.
