External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj and Defense Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman will be meeting the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo and US Defense Secretary on Thursday for the IndoUS 2+2 dialogue.
The meeting is aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries, as well as align each other’s interests. India’s relationship with Iran is also a key discussion point of meeting with the US re-sanction Iran and isolating the country.
Iran is one of India’s main crude oil suppliers with 25% of its crude originating from Iranian suppers. The US and India are expecting to discuss alternatives for energy supple as well as the economic cost that entails. India feels that Iran has the right to use the nuclear energy programme for civil use.
India is also key market for the US defense industry and the meeting will also be an opportunity for the US to solidify its market share and hedge against competition from Russia and China.
